How many pounds of fresh produce, meat, and eggs do I eat per day? This question came to me recently as I was considering my food consumption. Should I be eating more vegetables? Less meat? To help answer my question, I first had to do some math.
I took all of my receipts from the month of February and started tallying up my purchases. I chose February because it was a very consistent month, with no travelling and it stayed right around my budget at $285.44 for the entire month. ($70 per week or $10 per day was my budget.)
To recap, here are all of my February grocery hauls.
- February Costco Haul: $71.96
- Week 1 Haul: Mariano’s and Jewel: $56.51
- Week 2 Haul: Mariano’s and Jewel: $51.34
- Week 3 Haul: CSA Produce Box, Mariano’s and Jewel: $48.14
- Week 4 Haul: Mariano’s, Trader Joe’s, and TJ Maxx: $57.49
The total amount of vegetables purchased: 42.48 pounds
- Per week: 10.62 pounds
- Per person per week: 5.31 pounds
- Per person per day: .76 pounds
The total amount of fruit purchased: 14.06 pounds
- Per week: 3.52 pounds
- Per person per week: 1.76 pounds
- Per person per day: .25 pounds
The total amount of meat purchased: 32.79 pounds
- Per week: 8.2 pounds
- Per person per week: 4.1 pounds
- Per person per day: .59 pounds
The total amount of eggs purchased: 9.5 dozen or 114 eggs; 12.57 pounds
- Per week: 28.5 eggs; 3.14 pounds
- Per person per week: 14.25 eggs; 1.57 pounds
- Per person per day: 2 eggs; .22 pounds
Note: I buy for two adults.
These clearly aren’t perfect calculations. I split the pounds exactly in half, but there’s no guarantee that my husband Ty ate exactly half the eggs and that I ate half of the veggies. To be honest, I typically eat the majority of the fruit! Also, there are bones in the meat that we don’t eat, and parts of the produce that get tossed, making the exact weights inaccurate. But overall, I think this is a good visual, even if flawed.
I’m happy to see that I buy the most weight in vegetables! In total, this shows that I eat about 1lb per day of produce, nearly double what I eat in meat. However, I’m wondering if this should be more. Lee at Veggie Quest writes here about how she strives to eat 2lbs of veggies per day! If I were to up my produce intake, it would have to push something else out of the way, and this would likely be meat for me, something I’ve been considering limiting.
If I were to cut my meat consumption, from a financial standpoint, this would be very beneficial. The average price I pay for produce is $.99/lb whereas I typically pay around $1.99/lb for meat.
As for the eggs, I think 2 a day is just right!
I love seeing the breakdown of what I purchase laid out. I think it’s helpful for planning meals and going grocery shopping. At this point, I feel I have a very good feel for how much we consume. Everything we buy, we eat.
As for changes in my diet, I’d like to increase my vegetable weight to 1lb per day and try reducing my meat consumption to 1/2lb per day or less. I’ll keep my fruit and egg habits the same.
Do you know how many pounds of produce, meat, or eggs you eat daily? Do you think how much I consume is more or less than what you typically eat in a day?
