If it wasn’t for my 700 square foot Chicago apartment with its tiny kitchen, I’d probably be stocked to the brim with kitchen gadgets. They are just so fun! I mean, doesn’t everyone need an avocado slicer and a condiment gun? So maybe I’ve passed up on these items a few times (except for the pancake pen – Mom got that for her birthday a few years ago!), but there are definitely some kitchen gadgets that I can’t live without.
6 Best Kitchen Gadgets
This was on our wedding registry. The friends who bought it for us also gave us a meatloaf pan as the “practical” gift because they didn’t think we’d really use the big bulky thing. Guess which one has gotten more miles? I use my food processor for chopping veggies all at once, slicing perfect sweet potato chips, and even for making my own cashew butter. It may be a pain to clean, but it’s also my most beloved kitchen appliance.
I asked my culinary-school-graduate sister-in-law what her favorite kitchen gadget was before creating my wedding registry. She said an immersion blender. I had no clue what it was for, but I added it to the list. And I’m sure glad I did! This is what we use to make homemade mayo weekly, plus it whips up the fluffiest scrambled eggs and the frothiest DIY lattes.
3. Slow Cooker
This is something I think most home cooks know and love. It’s perfect for everything from whole chicken to a hearty chili. Stick your ingredients in, turn it on, and forget about it. It’s an amazing time saver!
I’ve literally had my Magic Bullet for 6 years and it’s just now starting to die on me. It’s the perfect small appliance for making individual smoothies, grinding up whole salt crystals, and even for making banana ice cream. It’s super easy to clean and takes up no space. The Magic Bullet was my first favorite kitchen gadget and will always hold a special place in my kitchen.
5. Food Scale
I originally bought a food scale to weigh food as a way to keep track of my daily intake. However, I quickly realized that having a food scale means you can measure your ingredients without having to dirty measuring spoons and cups. Genius! Not only does is require less dishes when making a recipe, it also ensures that your measurements are more accurate. Double win!
6. Oil Sprayer
This one I avoided for a long time. My mother had one and swore by it, but I was never that impressed… Until she bought me my own. Now I use it on the daily! It’s perfect for misting oil lightly on my homemade popcorn or making sure that my kale chips don’t get weighted down with too much grease. Think of it as an upgraded version of Pam; no chemicals needed, and you can use your favorite unrefined oil of choice!
So there you have it. If I was told that tomorrow I was going to be sent to a deserted island and I could only bring 6 kitchen gadgets with me, these are definitely the ones I’d take. (Although I’m not sure what great of help they’d be to my survival.)
Do you have a favorite kitchen gadget? I know you all do! I’d love to hear your must-haves below.
